NGHS finished the Autumn term on Friday the 18th of December with a day of festive activities. Staff and students had the option of coming in to school in Christmas dress and Year 11 were the socially distanced audience for a performance of ‘A Christmas Carol’. Three actors from a travelling Theatre group told the famous Charles Dickens’ tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, each playing multiple characters against a pop-up set and dramatic projection. Students were really engaged with the scenes they have studied in English.
At the end of the day, each student was presented with 3 presents, lovingly wrapped by staff, before they made their way home. Students each received a reading book which they had previously chosen, and two surprises, some opening them together with their classmates and some choosing to take the presents home to open on Christmas Day. The atmosphere was really magical and the NG family really came together to celebrate the end of a successful term despite the challenges of the Covid 19 pandemic.
Earlier in the day, the Year 11s had surprised staff by presenting each member of the team with a gift and a Christmas card with a personal message inside. The year group had all contributed funds to make this happen and thank the NG team for their support during their final year at Newall Green High School, and to make the team’s final Christmas at NG a special one. Staff were overwhelmed by this gesture and went home feeling full of pride.
