Art and Design and Photography GCSE students used their Saturday morning to take a trip into Manchester’s Northern Quarter to gather visual research for their coursework. Using DSLR cameras, they gathered lots of photos, working together to make sure everyone got what they needed. Some students took props with them to use in the city surroundings, and some were brave enough to ask in a hair salon if they could capture the stylists at work, the staff were more than happy to let students take photographs. As the trip came to end and everyone was a little chilly, Head of Art, Mrs Murray, treated the group to a hot chocolate in a local café which gave the students a chance to review their shots and make a note of what they were missing so that they could take some more photos on the way back to meet the bus. Taking time outside a normal lesson and visiting a new environment enriches the students’ portfolio and provides them with an opportunity to build on their skills and use their independent learning skills.
The Art and Design department also host a number of ‘Art Saturdays’ in school, opening up the studios for Year 10 and 11 to focus on their work for a few hours or deliver workshops on specific techniques and materials.
