Newall Green High School runs a ‘Sports Leaders’ programme for students. A Sports Leader’s role is to help organise any sporting events that are delivered in school such as Sports Day, inter-form sports week or even primary school tournaments which are regularly held at NGHS.
Anybody can be a Sports Leader from any age and can even help in a sport that they don’t actually play themselves. Being a Sports Leader gives students experience of planning and facilitating events and the chance to get recognised by external vacancies for opportunities such as football refereeing courses. A certificate in recognition of their achievement is presented to the Sports Leaders at the end of the academic year.
This academic year NGHS Sports Leaders have already supported the organisation of the inter form competitions for all NGHS year groups, have run a girls Year 3, 4, 5, and 6 football tournament that is held at NGHS 5 times throughout the year. They ran a primary school Year 5 and 6 mixed Basketball tournament which involved multiple primary schools from across Greater Manchester and they have also helped organise and run a swimming gala which was held at the Forum for over 15 schools and over 200 children.
What’s next for the Sports Leaders? In the Summer term, the Manchester FA are delivering a training day for them to boost their knowledge of leadership and management in Sport. At the moment, plans for NGHS whole school Sports Day are underway and it will be the responsibility of the Sports Leaders to make the event run smoothly and get each year group organised for the track and field races.
